Thatcham is often described as one of Britain’s oldest continuously inhabited settlements, with evidence of prehistoric activity around the Kennet Valley. It grew as a small market and coaching town on the Bath Road and later benefited from the Kennet and Avon Canal and railway links. The nearby reedbeds and lakes form important nature reserves, while modern Thatcham has expanded as a residential town close to Newbury. Its rental market is shaped by commuting, families and access to west Berkshire employment.
