Derby was one of the birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution — Lombe's Silk Mill on the River Derwent is often called the world's first modern factory, and the Derwent Valley Mills are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city became a centre of engineering excellence, home to Rolls-Royce aero engines and a major railway works, and it remains a hub for advanced manufacturing and rail engineering today. This strong engineering base, close to the Peak District, supports steady rental demand.
