Windsor developed around Windsor Castle, founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century and now the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world and an official royal residence. The town sits on the River Thames, directly across the water from Eton, home to the historic Eton College. Windsor Great Park and the tree-lined Long Walk stretch south from the castle, while the riverside, historic streets and the arrival of the railway in the 19th century shaped the town into a major tourist destination. Today Windsor combines royal heritage and tourism with strong commuter links to London and a sought-after local rental market.
