Stirling's strategic position controlling the lowest crossing of the River Forth made it a key to Scotland for centuries, earning it the nickname the 'Gateway to the Highlands'. Its castle, perched on a volcanic crag, was a favoured royal residence, and the nearby fields saw the battles of Stirling Bridge (1297) and Bannockburn (1314), where William Wallace and Robert the Bruce won famous victories. The soaring National Wallace Monument marks the skyline. A university city, Stirling has an active student and professional rental market.
