Southampton has been an important port since Roman and medieval times, protected by surviving town walls, and it grew into one of the world's great passenger and cargo ports. It was the departure point for the Mayflower in 1620 and for the Titanic's ill-fated maiden voyage in 1912. Today it is a major container port and cruise terminal, with a large university and a busy waterfront. This maritime economy and student population keep Southampton's rental market consistently active.
