Slough grew rapidly after the Great Western Railway arrived in 1838, transforming a group of small villages into an important industrial town. In the 1920s the Slough Trading Estate was established — one of the largest business parks in Europe under single ownership — and it remains a major employment centre today. Slough has long been a place of movement and trade thanks to its position between London and Reading and its closeness to Heathrow Airport and the M4. It is one of the most diverse towns in the UK, with a mix of housing that supports steady rental demand from commuters, families and workers across SL1, SL2 and SL3.
