Newtownabbey is a large urban area north of Belfast, created in 1958 by bringing together several communities including Glengormley, Whiteabbey, Jordanstown and Monkstown. Its name reflects the historic White Abbey, while the area’s modern growth was driven by suburban housing, industry and its position on routes around Belfast Lough. The University of Ulster’s Jordanstown campus, Cave Hill views and good access to Belfast shape local demand. Today Newtownabbey is a practical commuter rental area for greater Belfast.
