About Newcastle upon Tyne

Newcastle upon Tyne takes its name from the 'new castle' built by the Normans on the site of a Roman fort guarding a crossing of the River Tyne. It grew wealthy first on the coal trade — giving rise to the saying about 'carrying coals to Newcastle' — and then on shipbuilding and heavy engineering along the river. Its famous bridges, Grainger Town's elegant streets and the quayside define the city today. Newcastle is the commercial and cultural heart of the North East, with two universities and a lively rental market.
