Newbury grew wealthy in the Middle Ages on the wool and cloth trade, and its famous clothier 'Jack of Newbury' (John Winchcombe) became one of the richest merchants in Tudor England. The town sits on the River Kennet and the Kennet and Avon Canal, which helped it thrive as a trading and transport hub. Two Civil War battles were fought nearby in the 1640s. Today Newbury is known for Newbury Racecourse and as the home of technology company Vodafone, offering renters a market-town setting with good road and rail links across west Berkshire.
