Maidenhead began as a settlement beside a crossing of the River Thames and grew as a coaching town on the main road between London and the West. Brunel's Maidenhead Railway Bridge, completed in 1839, is famous for having the widest and flattest brick arches in the world at the time it was built. In the Victorian and Edwardian eras Maidenhead became a fashionable riverside resort, and Boulter's Lock remains one of the best-known spots on the Thames. Today Maidenhead is a growing commuter town, boosted by the Elizabeth line, with a strong local rental market across the SL6 postcode.
