Hatfield is a Hertfordshire town shaped by royal history, aviation and higher education. Hatfield House, built in the early 17th century, stands beside the Old Palace where Elizabeth I spent part of her childhood. In the 20th century the de Havilland aircraft company made Hatfield an aviation centre, producing famous aircraft including the Comet jet airliner. The University of Hertfordshire now occupies major former aerospace land, giving Hatfield a strong student and commuter rental market.
