Exeter is one of England's oldest cities, founded by the Romans as Isca Dumnoniorum, with sections of its Roman and medieval walls still standing. Its Gothic cathedral has the longest uninterrupted medieval vaulted ceiling in the world, and beneath the streets run medieval underground passages once built to carry water. The historic quayside on the River Exe is a popular waterfront today. As the cathedral and university city of Devon, Exeter has a busy, professional rental market.
