Birmingham grew into Britain's second city during the Industrial Revolution, earning the nickname 'the city of a thousand trades' and 'the workshop of the world' for its huge variety of manufacturing. It famously has more miles of canal than Venice, a legacy of moving goods in the industrial age. Home to the historic Jewellery Quarter, several universities and the Bullring shopping centre, Birmingham is a young, diverse and fast-changing city offering renters a large market with excellent rail links, including HS2 developments.
