Bedford is the county town of Bedfordshire, set on the River Great Ouse. It developed as a market and county centre, with Bedford Castle playing a role in medieval conflicts before its destruction in the 13th century. The town is strongly associated with John Bunyan, author of The Pilgrim’s Progress, who was imprisoned in Bedford. Victorian growth, rail links and a famously diverse population have shaped modern Bedford, which has a busy rental market for commuters, families and professionals.
