Open Homes workspaceAbout Basildon
Basildon was designated a New Town in 1949 to provide homes and jobs for London’s post-war population, combining older Essex villages such as Laindon, Pitsea and Vange into a planned urban area. Its town centre, industrial estates and road links were built around modernist planning principles, while later regeneration added new housing and leisure facilities. Today Basildon is a major south Essex employment and rental market, with rail links to London Fenchurch Street and access to the A127 and A13.
