Barking is one of east London's oldest settlements, centred for centuries on Barking Abbey, a powerful Anglo-Saxon and medieval religious house founded in the 7th century. The town later became closely tied to fishing, with Barking Creek supporting one of the country's largest fishing fleets in the 19th century. Industry, docks and the railway reshaped the area, followed by major housing growth including the Becontree estate nearby. Today Barking is a fast-changing regeneration area with strong rail, Underground and Overground links and a value-led rental market.
