Amersham has two distinct halves: the historic Old Amersham in the Misbourne valley, with a 17th-century market hall and old coaching inns, and Amersham-on-the-Hill, which grew rapidly after the Metropolitan Railway arrived in 1892 as part of 'Metro-land'. The town is remembered for the Amersham Martyrs, Protestants burned at the stake in the early 16th century. Set in the Chiltern Hills, Amersham is a prosperous commuter town on the Metropolitan line and Chiltern Railways, popular with families seeking countryside within reach of London.
